Marifer Veloz
About me
My name is Maria Fernanda, but I like using Marifer since it's a contraction of both my names. I am a scientist by profession, and I enjoy writing about science-related topics as well as the people involved in it. I learned to edit Wikipedia in 2013 as part of a Wikipedia in the Classroom project. In 2020, I resumed editing Wikipedia, focusing on writing about women in science, and created a project called Wiki-Científicas Mexicanas with the support of Wikimedia Mexico.
I studied a bachelor’s in Chemistry and Nanotechnology in Mexico. After college, I moved to Saudi Arabia to study a master’s in Bioscience. Currently, I am doing a double PhD. One is in Bioscience in Saudi Arabia, and the other is in Neuroscience in Italy. My research focuses on brain metabolism in memory stability, working with behavioral models, and analyzing brain samples with electron microscopy and 3D reconstructions.
My work
I am committed to the promotion of women in science and their work. In 2020, I created the project Wiki-Científicas Mexicanas (Wiki-Women in Science) in collaboration with Wikimedia Mexico to to improve the biographies of women in science on the spanish Wikipedia.
Among the objectives of the project are:
- Reduce the gender gap currently present in Wikipedia regarding the biographical content of women in science.
- Inspire and motivate others to join Wikimedia projects and contribute to the edition of science-related content.
- Promote free knowledge and ease of access, particularly to the Spanish-speaking community.
